Ithaca College wins American Marketing Association awards

Caroline Granger of Simsbury helped the Ithaca College Chapter of the American Marketing Association bring home three awards at the Annual Intercollegiate Conference in March.

Granger serves as Co-President of the group.

ICAMA won awards for excellence in the categories of membership, communication and chapter planning at the AMA's annual gathering in New Orleans. The awards put the chapter in the top 30 of 247 individual chapters.

The membership award reflects the chapter's ability to retain an active membership. Granger explained that they used a point system to encourage member participation in the group's activities. The member with the most points was invited to attend the conference with the chapter's executive board.

The communications award judges the group's ability to integrate followers into a social media strategy, while the chapter planning award is judged based on how the chapter planned for the year and what it was able to accomplish. Chapters had to submit their plans and annual reports to judges at the conference.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Salisbury Prize

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has announced that Omesh Kamat of Simsbury, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering, has been awarded the university's Salisbury Prize for academic excellence.

A total of 20 undergraduate students -- out of a class of more than 900 -- were nominated by WPI faculty to receive this award. The Salisbury Prize was instituted in 1871 by Stephen Salisbury, a 19th century businessman and philanthropist who was one of the founders of WPI. Salisbury established the award to recognize outstanding members of the senior class "who have faithfully, industriously, and with distinguished attainment" completed all course and project requirements for the bachelor's degree.

"These students exemplify the spirit of WPI," said dean of undergraduate studies Arthur C. Heinricher. "WPI is more than an academically elite university; from the moment our students set foot on this campus, we challenge them to use their intelligence and their abilities to solve problems and help people around the world. In addition to their exceptional coursework, each recipient of a Salisbury Prize has done outstanding work in all three of WPI's required projects, one in the Humanities and Arts, one addressing a problem at the intersection of science and technology with human need, and one in their major area of study. These students have helped make WPI a better place to study and work."
