MUSIC LISTENING ADVENTURES: Name That Tune – Famous Melodies

Join Simsbury resident, composer and pianist Juli Hall and her husband, cellist David Sims for Part 1 of a musical adventure that will send you whistling down the street and set your toes-a-tapping!  You will be surprised how many melodies you know, and you may not even know they’re sometimes hundreds of years old – they’re used in movies, commercials on TV, in department stores and in elevators! In this session you will survey tunes like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (a French tune that’s at least 250 years old!), Bach’s Air, the Brahms Lullaby sung in its original version, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, Jean-Joseph Mouret’s wonderful Rondeau (known to generations of Americans as the theme to Masterpiece Theater), and some surprising melodies from pieces like Zoltán Kodály’s Háry János Suite, Haydn’s “Emperor” Quartet, and John Philip Sousa’s Liberty Bell March.

Parts 2 and 3 of this series will be held on December 6 and 13 - you may register for 1 or more programs.

Juli Hall received her Master’s degree in music composition from the Yale School of Music. Her music has been performed in 2 dozen countries on 4 continents. David Sims also received a Master’s from Yale. He has performed in several symphony orchestras in Connecticut, was on the faculty of the June in Buffalo seminar for young composers and was a guest performer at the North American New Music Festival. He is a website designer as well as a musician.
