Simsbury Historical Society Centennial Celebration and Chili Cook off

The Simsbury Historical Society is holding a fantastic, fabulous and FREE public party for its 100th birthday -- and the whole town is invited!

On October 15, the Centennial Celebration will kick off at 11 a.m. with the firing of a 400-pound cannon, which will be fired on the hour during the event. The 18th Connecticut Regiment will entertain everyone with their authentic Revolutionary War music – just the beginning of the great music that will be performed by various groups throughout the course of the day.

At 12 p.m., the first Simsbury Chili Cook-off will begin. Local restaurants will be competing for the title of “Best Chili In Town” and the results will be determined by public vote! For $5, you can purchase a spoon and taste and judge all the chili; it’s the perfect fall food!

From 11-4:30, all sorts of family-friendly activities will be held on the Historical Society’s grounds.  Want to learn more about muskrats, canal boats, and revival meetings? Check out the  historical re-enactments taking place in the
Phelps Tavern, 1790’s schoolhouse and the 1695 Meetinghouse Simsbury Summer Theatre, Simsbury Theatre Guild and Renbrook Faculty actors will make history
fun (and funny!)

But wait, there’s more!  The event includes crafts, games and art activities for children (Make sure to visit the haypile – there are prizes in there!).  There will be a crafts fair and demonstrations by artisans. The Simsbury witch will pay a visit and local churches and synagogues will be competing in a Bake-off, with judges including our First Selectman,
members of the Board of Selectman, local chefs and other dignitaries.

The Marquis of Granby and two jazz groups will be performing, and On Tap, a great women’s a cappella group will be leading everyone in a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday as free birthday cakes donated by Harvest Café, Stop and Shop, Cupcakes, Fitzgerald’s and Pastels are
served. We’re also serving free Tulmeadow ice cream!

There’s much, much more: Musket and tomahawk demonstrations, classic cars and fire trucks; Land Trust, Garden Club and Ensign-Bickford talks - this is an event
that’s got something for everyone and is not to be missed -- it’s the largest event the Historical Society has ever held!
