Sundance Screening: "Miss Representation"

The revolutionary documentary about the objectification of women in the media, Miss Representation, will have its first public screening in Connecticut on Monday, May 16, 7:00 pm at The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury. The film debuted at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival this winter, where hundreds of potential attendees had to be turned away due to the film’s immense popularity. WFSB-TV Emmy-nominated journalist Susan Raff will moderate a discussion with the audience and students following the screening.

Conceived and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation brings together some of America’s most influential women in politics, news and entertainment, including Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem to give audiences an inside look at the media’s message and depiction of women. The film explores women’s under-representation in positions of power by challenging their limited and often disparaging portrayals in the media. Clips from programs such as “The Real Housewives of Orange County” are included in the film. Miss Representation takes the stand that the media is portraying women’s primary values as their youth, beauty and sexuality – rather than their capacity as leaders.
