UPDATED: Fire Destroys Barn off West Mountain Road

No one was injured.

A morning fire at 360 West Mountain Road on Monday — the homeowner called at 9:50 a.m. — destroyed a barn, but no one was injured. There were chickens in the barn and some personal belongings stored in the upper floor of the barn.

According to town records, the homeowners are Robert and Janice Rodin.

Tankers were called in from Avon and Canton because there are no hydrants in the area. Nine trucks from Simsbury responded, an engine and tanker from Avon and a tanker from Canton. In all approximately 24 firefighters were on scene.

The roughly 30 x 40-foor structure is part of the rear lot, which also meant the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company had to snake a long, thick yellow hose to the barn.

The fire was throughout the barn when the fire department arrived and the barn is a total loss, said First Assistant Chief/Deputy Fire Marshal Patrick T. Tourville.

"The fire was extinguished and units picked up within an hour and a half," he said.

The cause is still under investigation.
