Fire District Hosts Business Meeting on Inspections and Emergency Management

At the invitation of the Simsbury Fire District, members of the business community met at the Main Fire Station on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 to get updates on regular business fire inspections, including common fire code violations, and the latest in emergency management planning.

Deputy Fire Marshal Patrick Tourville addressed State regulations and safety precautions that are part of a routine fire inspection.  Some were common sense and other items were potential violations that need to be immediately addressed.  Tourville noted that his goal is to work with the business community on education first and to help solve potential violations.

Kevin Kowalski, CAO and Simsbury Fire Marshal, reviewed emergency management preparations before disaster strikes.  Businesses should have active and up to date plans for business interruption including determining the roles and responsibilities for communication to employees, clients, media and other relevant stakeholders.

Questions should be answered beforehand regarding phone and mail trees and employee evacuation and training.  As part of the presentation and handouts, Kowalski noted that data back-up is key to any emergency plan and a business interruption insurance policy should be discussed and considered.
