Football Finale Takes Center Stage on Turkey Eve

Simsbury sports digest for Nov. 22, 2011

This season has not gone according to plan for the football team. Clearly they did not expect to lose their first and second string quarterbacks to season ending injuries in the first two games of the season. But, the Trojans (3-6) have battled the whole way, showing character in the face of this adversity. They have one more hill to climb Wednesday as they travel to Glastonbury for their season finale. A victory would be a great way to close out this difficult season. It won't be easy though as the Tomahawks (7-2,) who are coming off a dominating 23-6 victory over South Windsor, have lost only once at home this season. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

Earlier this month the boys and girls cross country teams wrapped up their seasons in fine fashion. The girls placed 6th out of 22 teams in the open state championships at Hammonasset state park. The Trojans first five runners all finished in the top 75 including standout Sarah Mattison in 12th who ran a speedy 19:27, a pace of 6:17 per mile on the 5k course. Other notable Simsbury girls were Laura Picard in 28th, Victoria Schuler in 43rd, Caitlin Shaffer in 71st, and Joelle Ross in 75th.

The boys meanwhile placed 12th out of 20 teams, but had the best individual runner on either squad. Kevin Stanko ran a sizzling 16:08 to finish 5th. Stanko's breakneck pace of 5:13 per mile helped push him into the top 5. Other finishers for the Simsbury boys included Joel Kirk in 57th place, Jefferson Wilkes in 62nd, Philip Brown in 71st and right behind him was Jack Genovese in 72nd.
