Hello February!

New choices for this week in Simsbury.

The challenges of January left us with some things we enjoyed and some things we did not. As I tell my kids, the important thing is to decide what our attitude will be toward life’s tests. In this house, Harry Potter is still king, and so perhaps the words of J.K. Rowling via the character Albus Dumbledore will be more inspiring, “It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

So sending January 2011 off as a snowy memory, it is time to start thinking about February and all the activities to look forward to. Here are some ideas for choices in Simsbury in the next five days:

Monday, January 31 – Buy your tickets for ’s upcoming production of Chicago. “Chicago is a satire of a media and legal system that often makes celebrities out of criminals at the expense of justice,” said director Dr. Stuart Younse in his director’s notes on the play that opens this coming Friday Feb. 4 and runs until Feb. 13. Of course this play takes place in the 1920’s, but the point it makes rings all too true for our day and age. Here is the link to buy tickets in advance $12 for adults and $10 for students: http://www.simsbury.k12.ct.us/page.cfm?p=1624. This production is rated PG-13. Children 13 and under are suggested to be accompanied by an adult. Here is more information for the event http://www.simsbury.k12.ct.us/page.cfm?p=1628.

Tuesday, February 1 – The Simbury Arts Academy Spring Registration has started. Spring offerings in visual arts, performing arts and music are available for elementary grades through high school. See this link for the brochure: http://www.simsbury.k12.ct.us/uploaded/SHS_Content/Art/SAA/SAA_Brochure_LEGAL_SPRING_2011.pdf . In particular the “Ceramic Gargoyle and Fantasy Figures” sounds particularly interesting as does anything involving gargoyles.

Wednesday, February 2 – It is Groundhog Day and we will find out when spring is coming. In the meantime, the is bringing another helpful program called, “SAT or ACT?” where two professional tutors will help you with the decision of which test is best for your high school sophomore or junior to take.
