Hoops Season Starts the Way It Ended

Simsbury sports digest for December 9, 2011.

This was not the kind of start they were looking for. After losing nine straight games to close last season, the Simsbury girls basketball team was hoping for better things this season. But, the 2011-2012 season started much the way the 2010-2011 closed ... with a loss. The Trojans (0-1) fell at home to South Windsor 57-43. Simsbury actually played well defensively in this one, holding the Warrios to just 6 points in the 3rd quarter. They could not get their shots to fall though. Except for sophomore Allie Davis who led the team with 15 points, and added 4 steals, and 5 rebounds. Senior Captain Taylor Perry had a solid game as well with 10 points and 4 assists. The Trojans are back at it tonight as they visit Southington for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Elsewhere on the schedule ... the Simsbury indoor track team will open its season at the New Haven Developmental event at Hillhouse which starts at 9 a.m. Saturday. This is a sport that is really growing at . In just its 3rd season, 68 students tried out. That is up from the mid-40s a year ago. Among the members are runners Kevin Stanko and Tori Schuler both of whom ran on last year's squad and are coming off very successful fall cross country seasons where both boys and girls teams finished 4th in the Class LL state meet. Pole vault also figures to be a strength as Alex Rechin and Chandler Ives are back after performing well a year ago.
