Hundreds Of US Flags Retired From Simsbury Veterans

Simbury veterans groups were joined by veterans groups from nearby towns in a special flag retirement ceremony earlier this month.

SIMSBURY, CT — In a ceremony full of poignancy and patriotism, area veterans groups joined Simsbury's veterans community in a special flag disposal program earlier this month.

The Simsbury VFW and American Legion chapters hosted the U.S. flag retirement ceremony Oct. 14 at the town's special platform, which was created for such events at the Weatogue Fire Station.

According to event organizers, more than 350 flags were retired that day.

Residents of surrounding towns, including military veterans, members of the Abigail Phelps Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and others joined with elected and appointed officials to attend the ceremony.

The program was the inaugural use of the platform.

Selected parts of the American Legion’s “Ceremony of Retirement of Unserviceable and Old Colors” were recited and Color Guard was provided by Simsbury Scout Troop 175.
