Invasive Species: Plants and Insects

Insects and plants silently, slowly, persistently invade our conservation lands, parks and yards and gardens. What can we do about it?

The Silent Invaders. Insects and even more so plants silently, slowly, persistently invade our conservation lands, parks and yards and gardens. It we don’t look intensely on a regular basis, a trail can be overwhelmed by mile-a-minute vine before we know it is there. What makes a species invasive? Who are the common invaders in Connecticut? Can anything be done about these species? Bring in suspects from your yard for possible identification.

Rose Hiskes works as a diagnostician and horticulturist at The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in Windsor. Rose has a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in plant science from the University of Connecticut. She has worked in the green industry for over 25 years. Some of her horticultural interests are insects, flower gardening and invasive plants. She is a volunteer with the Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group.
