Through humor and clever storytelling, the show explores big ideas like environmental sustainability, corporate power, and social justice.

"This show offers rich opportunities for ensemble acting, strong vocals, creative staging, and meaningful discussions," reads an announcement about the play.

"It’s a rare blend of fun, musical creativity, and thoughtful commentary. It challenges students to think critically and artistically and lets them have fun doing it."

While on Broadway, this show received 10 Tony Award nominations and won three Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Direction of a Musical. Critics praised it as a bold, inventive, and smartly written piece of theater.

The Simsbury High School Urinetown production has more than 70 students who have rehearsed for 12 weeks with their theater director, Katrina Stodd Knapp.

“Urinetown is a funny and creative way to talk about real issues like fairness, the environment, and leadership. It’s a great example of how theater can make us laugh and think at the same time,” said Knapp.
