New Phone Scam Hits Simsbury: SPD
The Simsbury PD Tuesday warned about phony calls claiming to be government entities, including local police, seeking bank account info.

SIMSBURY, CT — Local police are warning folks of a financial scam making its way in town that also includes someone impersonating Simsbury police.
The Simsbury Police Department Tuesday afternoon described the scam as follows:
• A local resident received a call from a person claiming to be from the state Office of the Inspector General, who tells the victim their bank account has been compromised.

Police said in this instance, the person being called grew skeptical and hung up.

• That's when the caller received a follow-up call with a number matching the Simsbury Police Department's number (860-658-3100), with the caller saying they're "confirming" the bank account was compromised and the resident needed to transfer money.
Simsbury police said all of this is a scam aimed at getting access to bank accounts and draining them.
Police said the SPD will not call and ask anyone for any funds or transfers of cash.
The SPD suggests that if someone isn't sure they're speaking to the department or any other government entity, they should disconnect the call and call the government entity back.
And, as always, they urge folks to never "give your personal or financial information in response to a request that you did not expect," police wrote in a release.
