Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge News

Sometimes events occur that elicit both anticipation and disappointment and so it is this year. Over the past few years, the ODHFB Committee has been working in partnership with the Town of Simsbury to develop a plan to address the maintenance and upgrades needed for the Flower Bridge. It is with excitement, anticipation and gratitude that we announce that there will be a large scale renovation that will close the Bridge as well as Hop Brook Landing Park this fall through the year of 2024 in order for the town to repair and repaint the Bridge. This is a much needed project. As a result there will be no flowers on the Bridge or in the park in the spring, summer and fall of 2024.

In preparation for the refurbishment, beginning the week of September 25th, the bridge volunteers will be removing the flowers from all the boxes baskets and border columns and then all the box dirt. Although we realize this is earlier than usual, we need to do this to be ready for the repainting project. The renovations necessitate the removal of flower boxes/baskets/border columns, lighting and irrigation. The new coating system will bring the Bridge back to its original, historic Federal Standard #595C green. It was last painted in 1995.

We so appreciate all your support of the Flower Bridge and Park. We will miss seeing you on the bridge during the renovation but look forward to meeting you on our glorious 1892 updated Bridge.
