SIMSBURY, CT — A 4-minute, 11-second video of a July blaze posted on social media by the Simsbury Police Department Thursday shows the essence of what goes on after someone calls for help.

On Wednesday, the couple rescued in the fire were reunited with the responders who saved them, according to WFSB Channel 3.

The video starts with a 911 call of a local woman — who WFSB identified as Michele Angers — at 270 Bushy Hill Road reporting smoke everywhere and heat from downstairs.

The dispatcher, in a calm voice, tells Angers to evacuate, but she said that wasn't possible because the only way out was through the smoke and heat.

Footage then shifts to arriving police officers, who reported the kitchen fully engulfed and smoke filling up in the house.

At that point, Angers reports "we are starting to have trouble breathing here," according to the footage.

As firefighters from the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Co. arrived, it was clear the smoke was too strong and there was zero visibility downstairs.

In fact, the footage shows that as responders went to work, an orange glow is seen in the house. Ultimately, police and firefighters safely evacuated Angers and a man identified by WFSB as Tom Gaffey, along with two dogs via a ladder to their bedroom.

The home was severely damaged, but all lives were saved.

Police officials said the video was an example of the important role teamwork plays when responder agencies tend to an emergency.

"Truly remarkable. The teamwork, courage, strength, determination, commitment and level-headedness," wrote Simsbury Chief of Police Nicholas J. Boulter on Facebook. "I am very proud of the life-saving actions by our police, dispatcher and firefighters during a house fire on July 6, 2022."
