MAY 25: It was a showdown between the "buries" Friday afternoon at Conard High School. One week after a tough 8-4 loss to their CCC West rivals Glastonbury, Simsbury faced off against them again in the division's championship game. This time the Trojans found a way to come out on top.
Friday's match-up was a back-and-forth, low-scoring battle. Lots of turnovers prevented either team from building momentum.
The clock was winding down in the fourth quarter with Glastonbury holding a one-goal lead when Simsbury attackman Mason Burr found the goal. The game was tied at 4-4 when the buzzer sounded.
Simsbury secured possession of the ball early in sudden-death overtime and applied pressure on the Glastonbury defense. Junior attackman Aaron Riccio cut across the crease and senior John Ryan fed him the ball for the championship-winning goal.
Trojan goalie, Tim Maher, was hot in the goal with nine saves, lots of hustle, and great clears. He was awarded the MVP Award for the game.
Next week the 15-3 Trojans begin their Class L state tournament run. They are seeded #2 and their first game is scheduled for Wednesday, 5/29, at home. They will take on the winner of the Newington-Brien McMahon game that is being played today. Simsbury beat both teams earlier in the season.
