Richard Russo Author Luncheon May 6, Get Tickets by April 27

The Pulitzer-Prize winning author will speak at a luncheon at Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury. The public is welcome.

The Friends of the Simsbury Library are holding their popular annual Author Luncheon on May 6, featuring a best-selling author, a delicious lunch, in the gorgeous spring setting of the Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury. This year, we are honored to welcome Pulitzer Prize winning author Richard Russo.

Russo was born and raised in Gloversville, NY. After obtaining BA, MFA and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona, he taught at the college level until the success of his novel, Nobody’s Fool (book and movie), allowed him to give up teaching and pursue his career in writing.

Among his many novels and a short story collection, best-sellers include Empire Falls (2002 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction), Straight Man, Bridge of Sighs and That Old Cape Magic. Russo’s realistic but highly eccentric characters--worn-out construction workers, odd-jobbers, barflies and ne’er-do-wells--reveal both the dignity and the desperation of life in crumbling American towns. Despite their melancholic surroundings, Russo often treats his protagonists with his unique, wry sense of humor.

His memoir, Elsewhere, was named by NPR as Best Book of 2012, calling it “One of the most honest, moving American memoirs in years”. When Hollywood discovered Russo’s work, he added well-paying screenwriting jobs to his resume. His screenplays include Twilight, Empire Falls, Ice Harvest and Keeping Mum.

Russo and his wife live in Camden, Maine and spend winters in Boston.
