The Simsbury Boys Varsity Rugby team will kick off its Senior celebration Saturday May 11th at 12:00pm at Holden Field. The 2019 senior class is the largest field of players (24) ever to play the sport at Simsbury High School with many of them starting in the clubs youth program. The team, fresh off its tour of Ireland during spring break, could clinch its 6th straight state playoff appearance with a win.
The Boys Varsity program is one of the largest boys programs at Simsbury High School with 75 boys registered to participate in Rugby. The team participates in one of the toughest Rugby conferences in the country, with 2 teams ranked in the top ten for High Schools in the country and several High school All Americans. The team is led by Senior Captains Aiden Brown, Richie Candelario, Griffin Dorman, Joe Matteo, Patrick Shanley, and Junior Arjun Bhamidpati.
The highlight of the year so far, was its week long tour of Ireland with 45 boys participating. The team played games against the Galway Corinthians, Limerick Bohemians, and Dublin Ashbourne Rugby club. The team also had a chance to kiss the Blarney stone, see the Cliffs of Moher, participate in Gaelic Games, see the Book of Kells, attend a professional Rugby game, and experience the culture of Ireland.
