SHS Senior to Attend Prestigious Opera Singers Program
Selected as one of only ten talented singers from across the U.S. and Canada

Simsbury High School (SHS) senior Emily Steele has been selected to attend the Metropolitan Opera’s 2019 High School Opera Singers Intensive Program in New York City in February. Emily was selected as one of only ten talented singers from across the United States and Canada to participate in this prestigious program. She had to audition for the program (with two vocal pieces—an aria and an art song), and she also had to submit a letter of recommendation, a resume, and an essay.
Emily will spend five days in February at the Metropolitan Opera, working with professional artists and teachers. She will participate in daily master classes, song interpretation, opera tips and technique, a backstage tour of the Met Opera house and work with a Met artist. Emily will also attend an opera at the Met and will perform in a recital on the final day.
Said Angela Griffin, Simsbury’s Director of Music & Performing Arts, “The Simsbury Music Department is extremely proud of Emily and this great accomplishment. Emily is an outstanding vocalist with a bright future ahead of her, setting high standards and goals for herself as well as being an outstanding young individual. We are looking forward to hearing more about Emily’s experience at the Metropolitan Opera and her future endeavors as a performing artist.”
