Simbury Winter is Settling in

Five things to do or buy in the next five days.

The first sneaky storm of 2011 caught us a bit off guard. Coming home from a party in Massachusetts, we gave up driving for staying in an ironically named “Quality Inn”, which was better than le hotel mini van at any rate. It was good to navigate the crew into a safe place to sleep and not clench teeth anymore after seeing a car do no less than three 360’s on I-95. It seems winter is settling in and my kids are out right now building “snow dogs” and “snow turtles” while my husband is stacking wood and alternately sledding in the back yard. Life is good.

For this snowy week in January, I have some tips for some things to enjoy in Simsbury.

Monday, January 10 – After watching Downtown Abbey on PBS Sunday night at 9pm, wake up and catch the last day of promotional “artisan breakfast sandwich” which is just $2 when you buy any beverage at Starbucks. This includes applewood smoked bacon, egg, and gouda cheese, veggie, egg, and Monterey jack cheese, or the classic sausage, egg, and cheddar sandwich on artisan bread – while supplies last.

Tuesday, January 11 – While you are packing up your Christmas decorations, stop into at the for their 50 percent off all Christmas items. In particular I like their bear pillows and have an idea for a Simsbury bear T-shirt design that may be my ticket to fame one of these days. Also, I am on the hunt for Santa mugs, if anyone comes across some please do pass on the information!

Wednesday, January 12 – Check out the Art Support Group’s exhibit at the program room. There are some interesting things to see there as this unique group of seasoned and new artists encourages and inspires one another to try new styles. Then have some lunch at . I hear the lunch specials, which are priced from $5.95-$7.95, provide plenty of food. They are open for lunch (and dinner too) from 11-3pm Mondays-Saturdays. See http://www.meadowrestaurant.com/lunch.html for more information.

Thursday, January 13 – Sign up ahead of time for the Job Finding Workshop at the Simsbury Public Library. “Internet Job Search Strategies” is running from 2-4pm and lead by Marcia LeReau. Besides being someone with a lot of business experience, LeReau is a motivational speaker and president of Forward Motion. She will walk you through each step of finding employment opportunities on the internet and help you with your career transition. Friday, January 14 – As movie going is one of my favorite things to do this time of year, I will be bringing my date to see The Fighter at cinema. "Nobody has heart like Mickey Ward" according to the trailer and I am brushing up on my Boston accent for the event. Not to mention, is next door and I think my indulgent magazine is in, the UK edition of Country Living. It is much less daunting to buy just one in the bookstore, but here is how to subscribe otherwise (in case you need a birthday present idea): http://www.expressmag.com/en-US/magazines/product/description/country-living/563/
