The holiday was born out of the nation's labor movement and has, since, evolved into the notion of summer's last hurrah for all.
It is always the first Monday in September and, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it is "an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers."

"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," reads the U.S. Department of Labor website.
