SIMSBURY, CT — It will cost residents significantly more cash to dispose of their bulky waste following the Simsbury Board of Selectmen vote earlier this month.

Selectmen July 10 unanimously approved a new fee schedule for the transfer station's bulky waste services on Wolcott Road.

While the site isn't operated by town employees, it is staffed by waste contractor wokers from Paine's out of East Granby/Simsbury.

And, according to Simsbury Directory of Public Works Thomas J. Roy, costs in dealing with recyclables and bulky waste are going up.

As a result, he said, Paines is asking to increase the permit fee from $25 to $40 per year (60 percent hike) and $10 - $15 (50 percent increase) for a special one-wee pass.

"With the increased cost in recycling the last few years, which most of us are familiar with, Paine's is looking to increase the permit fee for a full year from $25 to $40 and the one-week permit from $10 to $15," said Roy.

Roy said he did check with other facilities in other regions and Simsbury's new fees were comparable.

"All in all, the town is receiving a great value," Roy said.

According to Roy, the transfer station — still referred to locally as the "landfill" despite the landfill being long closed — is a busy place in town.

"If you go there on a Saturday, it's the place to be. People are committed to that," he said.

Selectmen easily approved the fee hikes with no discussion.
