Simsbury Crew Competes at Hartford’s Head of the Riverfront Regatta

Simsbury High School’s crew team made its fall debut this last weekend by competing at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta in Hartford on Sunday, October 2. They braved the icy wind to race in challenging water conditions against high schools from all over the Northeast. For all the Freshmen this would be their first time experiencing rowing in a regatta.

The boats launched throughout the day, making their way to the start situated in the Wethersfield Cove area. They then raced an approximately 2.25 mile course to the finish line at the Mortensen Riverfront Plaza.

The second and third boys boats were first on the water, competing in the Men’s 2nd Junior 8+ against 21 other boats. The third boat finished 20th with 17:29.27. The second boat came in16th with a time of 15:33.37. The girls second and third boats competed in the Women’s 2nd Junior 8+ against 19 other boats. The third boat finished 20th with 21:59.06. The second boat came 16th with a time of 18:27.27. The girls first varsity boat competed in the Women’s 1st Junior 8+ race against 18 boats and achieved 11th place, clocking in a time of 15:36.41. To end off the day the boys 1st varsity boat rowed against 27 other crews and came in 16th , with a time of 13:27.41. The coaches were very pleased with the results given the athletes’ lack of water time due to the drought. They are looking forward to their next regatta, at the NE Regionals on Lake Quisigamond in Worcester, MA, this coming weekend.
