Simsbury Crew Competes at Lake Waramaug

Kent Invitational brings together crews from across Connecticut

Simsbury Crew returned to picturesque Lake Waramaug to compete against teams from across Connecticut at the Kent Invitational, held on Saturday, May 11. While the day was sunny with temperatures in the 60’s, athletes did have to contend with a strong headwind throughout the day as they raced on a scenic 1500-meter stretch of the lake.

Simsbury girls faced competition from East Lyme and Farmington high schools, as well as Connecticut Boat Club (CBC) and private schools Kent and Sacred Heart. The girls first varsity boat finished third in their race with a time of 6:04.3, behind Kent and CBC but ahead of East Lyme, Sacred Heart and Farmington. Guided by Chris Norwell (coxswain), the Relentless was powered by Izzy Kuczorski, Maddie Dempsey, Kyra Sanborn-Burch, Abby Hammel, Jess Serra, Lucy O’Sullivan, Millie Malloy, and Elena Marchetti, and coached by Ann Carabillo.

The girls second varsity race had the same outcome – Kent first, CBC second, and Simsbury third, followed by East Lyme, Sacred Heart and Farmington. Rowing the course in the Simsbury Bank with a time of 6:22.2 were Olivia May (coxswain), Eleanor Potter, Katie Costello, Marissa Phillips, Charlotte Derway, Gill Forsberg, Olivia Romanowsky, Alexa Michaud, and Morgan de Groot, coached by Ann Carabillo.

In boys racing, competitors included Farmington High School and private schools Kent, Salisbury, Brunswick, and Fairfield Prep. Simsbury’s third boat finished third in their race, 6.3 seconds behind first place Kent and only one second behind second place Fairfield Prep. Simsbury was followed by Brunswick, Farmington, and Salisbury. Moving the Hawthorne for Simsbury were Jack Williams, Cael DiMascio, Riley Duncan, Austin Lemis, Jack Sherman, Samuel Parenti, Matthew Dacey, Grey DiMascio, and Reed Bluestein (coxswain), coached by Paul Carabillo.

The remaining Simsbury crews also rowed well,with the boys second varsity boat finishing in fifth with a time of 5:28.7, the boys novice boat finishing in fourth with a time of 6:10.6, and the girls third boat finishing in fourth at 6:45.9. The boys first varsity crew finished sixth, with no official time recorded due to an issue with the timing device.

Simsbury Crew is excited to return to Lake Waramaug on Sunday, May 19 to compete at the Connecticut Public School Rowing Championships. Races begin at 9:00 am and continue throughout the day. For more information about the Simsbury Crew program, visit www.simsburycrew.org.
