Simsbury Crew Gives Back

Athletes volunteer in the community to support two Simsbury traditions

Simsbury Crew’s varsity and junior varsity athletes put their teamwork skills to work out in the community last weekend by helping the Friends of the Simsbury Public Library get ready for their annual Giant Used Book Sale, and by managing the Innovative Inflatables section of Septemberfest at the Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center.

Over the summer, the Friends of the Simsbury Public Library collected books, games, puzzles, and other donations from the community and sorted items into boxes to be moved. The Crew team then worked in shifts to move the books from the library to the sale location at the high school, loading hundreds of boxes onto moving trucks and then meeting the trucks at the high school to unload. More than fifty athletes moved several truckloads over the course of an afternoon, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams doing the heavy lifting. Proceeds from the ever popular Book Sale are used to support the many programs, services and activities funded by the Friends of the Simsbury Public Library.

Athletes also split up into shifts over the weekend to help manage the flow of visitors at the Inflatables section of Septemberfest, which took place September 6-8. Simsbury Crew provided the staff to monitor the inflatables, manage traffic flow and help keep everyone safe on the various slides and bouncers which featured as part of the event’s family activities. Other Septemberfest offerings throughout the weekend included live music, food vendors, a Business Expo, and a fire truck parade on Ironhorse Boulevard.

Simsbury Crew has been lending a hand at both the Library Book Sale and Septemberfest for over 20 years and looks forward each year to supporting these popular community events.

The Library Book Sale and Septemberfest coincide each year with the start of Simsbury Crew’s fall season. Despite the low water in the Farmington River this year, athletes are working on building fitness and teamwork skills in preparation for a race schedule which begins on October 6 in Hartford.
