Simsbury Crew Opens the Season at Head of the Riverfront Regatta

Simsbury High School’s crew team made its fall debut this last weekend by competing at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta in Hartford on Sunday, October 1. They battled challenging conditions on the Connecticut River, competing against high schools from all over the Northeast.

Despite facing a formidable headwind and navigating through tricky currents on a full Connecticut River, the rowers gave it their all. For the freshmen on the team, this regatta marked their first experience in a competitive rowing event. The boats launched from the Riverside Park, throughout the day, making their way to the start situated in the Wethersfield Cove area. They then raced an approximately 2.25 mile course to the finish line at the Mortensen Riverfront Plaza.

The second and third boy's boats were the first to launch, competing in the Men’s 2nd Junior 8+ against 33 other boats. The third boat finished 33rd, and the second boat came in 30th. The girl's second and third boats then competed in the Women’s 2nd Junior 8+ against 15 other boats. The third boat finished 17th. The second boat came 9th. The girl's first varsity boat competed in the Women’s 1st Junior 8+ race against 17 boats and achieved 11th place. To end off the day the boy's 1st varsity boat rowed against 25 other crews and came in 20th. The Simsbury crew are looking forward to their next regatta, at the NE Regionals on Lake Quisigamond in Worcester, MA, on Sunday 8th October.
