Simsbury Crew Prepares for Fall Rowing Season

Open House Scheduled for August 18

Despite a break in the practice schedule for the summer months, the Paine Boathouse has been busy with Simsbury High School rowers and coxswains getting ready for the Fall rowing season.

Throughout the summer, athletes volunteered their time to assist coaches with annual boathouse work, including sanding and painting oars, gardening, organizing and cleaning the boathouse interior, and trimming back brush on the property. The overhauling of each boat was also a major focus. Boys Head Coach Ann Carabillo stressed the importance of this work, saying that, “this dedicated time to maintaining the building and equipment each summer allows the team to keep our equipment in competitive shape for many years.”

Many high school rowers also took advantage of summer crew camps and conditioning clinics, designed to reinforce proper rowing technique and build on fitness levels that were achieved during the Spring season. Additional camps were offered for novice rowers who had an interest in learning the sport from experienced coaches and staff.
