Simsbury Crew Races at Pumpkinhead Regatta
Athletes from Avon, Burlington, Farmington and Simsbury compete in end-of season race
Simsbury Crew completed its 2019 Fall racing season last Saturday, November 2 at the Pumpkinhead Regatta, hosted by Farmington Crew. The Pumpkinhead is a much-loved annual regatta which brings local high school crew teams together for some friendly competition as they celebrate the end of the Fall racing season.
Pumpkinhead tradition encourages athletes to adopt themed costumes as they navigate a course on the Farmington River, creating a fun atmosphere in keeping with the spirit of Halloween. Family and friends from Avon, Farmington, Burlington, and Simsbury who came to socialize and cheer on their athletes were treated to creative costumes including themes around Christmas, Winnie the Pooh, movie characters, clowns, and more.
Throughout the day, Simsbury's athletes rowed well against the local competition, with third boys, novice boys, and first and second novice girls each finishing second in their races. In the Boys Varsity race, Simsbury’s first varsity boys finished second and the second varsity boys tied for third; and in the Girls Varsity race, Simsbury’s first varsity girls finished first and the second varsity girls came in fifth.

For Simsbury’s novice athletes, the Pumpkinhead was their first chance to race after spending the Fall learning the sport of rowing.
Athletes and coaches will now take the winter off from racing but will spend time on maintaining fitness levels in order to be prepared for the Spring season, which begins in just a few short months.
