Simsbury Crew Races for Quinsigamond Cup
Several boats place third among strong competition
Simsbury Crew’s first varsity boats each finished third in competitive races at the “Q Cup” in Worcester, Massachusetts on Saturday, April 27. Facing competition from East Lyme, St. John’s High School (MA), Brookline (MA), Shrewsbury (MA) and Hanover (NH), rowers contended with unseasonably cold Spring weather and strong winds which pushed the start for all races at varying distances below the line.
The girls first varsity boat beat Hanover and East Lyme for a third place finish behind Brookline and Shrewsbury, missing second place by less than half of a second. Rowing in the Relentless for Simsbury were Elena Marchetti, Millie Malloy, Lucy O’Sullivan, Jess Serra, Abby Hammel, Kyra Sanborn-Burch, Maddie Dempsey, Izzy Kuczorski, and Chris Norwell (coxswain). The crew is coached by Ann Carabillo.
The boys first varsity race was also close, with Simsbury finishing ahead of Shrewsbury by less than a second and behind Brookline by less than four seconds. St. John’s was first and Hanover and East Lyme finished fifth and sixth. Moving the Ironhorse for Simsbury were Will Dempsey, Adam Stine, Kyle Shaw, John Cody, Elias Hanna, Ethan Boyd, James Hammel, Chris Harvill, and Joe Bogdan (coxswain), coached by Adam Askham.
