Simsbury FD Trains For Every Type Of Emergency

The Simsbury Volunteer Fire Co. Monday drew up rare emergencies responders might encounter as part of a problem-solving exercise.

SIMSBURY, CT — Anyone who has seen an episode of "9-1-1," "Grey's Anatomy" or — for older folks — "Emergency" knows responders have to be prepared for anything.

And by "anything" that means just about any type of conundrum and emergency humanely possible.

Monday, the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Co. prepared for such situations where there is no standard, by-the-book response.

According to SVFC officials, these are as much "problem-solving" exercises as responder training sessions.

For example, volunteer firefighters trained Monday on what to do if someone gets their hand/arm caught in a snowblower, has a car fall on top of them while they're working on it or, even, a piece a large piece of pipe pin their legs to the ground.

Of course, the volunteers utilized in the training exercise were made of plastic and, hopefully, the SVFC won't have to utilize their newfound skills anytime soon.

But, according to fire officials, such "complex puzzles" are something responders have to be ready for.

"Though not a Sunday NYT crossword, we threw a few different scenarios at the crews this evening to test our problem-solving skills and ignite some 'outside the box thinking,'" wrote the SVFC.

" We challenged our members with stabilization, cutting, removal, and medical considerations for a variety of challenges."
