Simsbury High School Girls' Crew Team Sweeps at Q-Cup Race
Simsbury High School Crew Team

The Spring season of SHS crew is well underway and already has some excellent results. This past weekend, the team competed at the Q-Cup race held on Lake Quinsigamund in Worcester, Mass. This race features a combination of schools from Massachusetts (St. John’s, Brookline and Shrewsbury) and 3 schools from Connecticut – Simsbury, East Lyme and Middletown. The SHS girls swept all three of their races, which is a great early season benchmark.
The Q-Cup race was a 1500 meter race. There was no wind at the start line through the first 500m. The breeze did pick up to about 5 mph in the last 1k of the race. This was a steady breeze that came from the starboard side bow. Simsbury’s 1st Varsity girls (Rachel Harris, Bailee Cota, Erica Bushey, Kaitlyn May, Allison May, Megan Russell, Giuliana Marchetti, Carolyn Croke, Brenna Kelly, cox) won their race with a time of 5:45.8, a solid 5 seconds ahead of the 2nd place finisher, East Lyme. 2nd Girls Varsity (Kelly Englisby, Lydia Aschepkova, Anna Paquette, Anastasia Aschepkova, Kerry Doran, Bianca Sanitago-Douglas, Hannah Sullivan, Julie Sojkowski, Cameron Rosenthal, cox) finished first with a time of 5:59.7, and 3rd (Lauren Casey, Taylor Jackson, Savannah Herbek, Emma Costello, Brianna Gaffney, Cassidy Correll, Grace Neagoy, Hannah McKelvey, Julia Pugmire, cox) won with a time of 6:04.1. All three boats were awarded trophies.
The Q-Cup race is known for attracting powerful competitors. The Boys finished 2nd in the 4th Varsity race (5:45.3), 3rd in the 2nd varsity (5:34.9), 3rd in the 3rd Varsity (5:33.3), and 4th in 1st Varsity (5:06.0). All Boys races were won by Massachusetts teams. It was a good day for racing at all levels. Next up is the Kent Invitational at Lake Waramaug in Kent, CT on May 14th. This is a beautiful setting.
