Simsbury Issues Heat Wave Alerts, Information

The Town of Simsbury is urging folks to keep cool by utilizing town facilities, including its public pools during the upcoming hot spell.

SIMSBURY, CT — This week's expected scorching temperatures have prompted Simsbury town officials to issue an alert and tips regarding how folks can stay cool when the mercury is hot.

Local officials said hot temperatures are expected to lasting through Sunday morning.

Simsbury officials said Wednesday that temperatures during the heat wave will be very hot and humid, with highs of more than 90 degrees.

"We will approach 'heat advisory' criteria on Thursday and Friday, meaning it will feel like it is more like 100 degrees and may reach up to 105," wrote the Town of Simsbury Wednesday.

"Governor Ned Lamont has directed the state’s extreme hot weather protocol to be activated during this time period."

The Town of Simsbury and the Department of Community and Social Services is reminding residents of the best practices to stay cool.

Tips include:

• Try to stay inside where it is cool and utilize fans and air conditioning when available.

• Keep shades or curtains closed during the day. That will help keep a home cooler.

• If you must be outside, stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure to the extent possible.

• Early mornings and evenings are the best times to be outside, so plan accordingly.

For those who need respite respite from the heat, the Simsbury Public Library, 725 Hopmeadow St., is open during normal business hours — Monday through Thursday (9:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.), Friday (9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.) and Saturday (9:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.).

"We encourage you to take advantage of the many open spaces Simsbury has to offer," wrote the town. "Suggested open spaces include the pavilions at Town Forest, Tariffville Park and Hop Brook Landing (the Flower Bridge) and taking advantage of places with good tree canopies such as the trails in the Ethel Walker Woods and state parks located in town."

You may also take advantage of the public swimming pools at Simsbury Farms, 100 Old Farms Road. Public swim is available Monday through Friday (1 to 8 p.m.), Saturday and Sunday (noon to 6 p.m.).

The Memorial Wading Pool, 22 Plank Hill Road, is also available Monday through Saturday (10:30 a.m. to noon.)

Simsbury officials also urge folks to check on elderly family members and neighbors and never leave children or pets in an unattended vehicle.
