Simsbury Obituary: Joan Schramm, 83

Condolences to her family and friends.

Joan C. Schramm, of Granby, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017, surrounded by her family at her home.

Born in Canton on August 17, 1933, daughter of the late Emil and Evelyn (Zaugg) Schramm, she was a lifelong resident of Granby and a graduate of Simsbury High School, Class of 1951. After high school, Joan continued her education at Teacher's College of Connecticut, now Central Connecticut State University. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Education and later completed her Masters in Education at the University of Hartford.

Joan taught accounting and other business classes for over 34 years at Suffield High School until her retirement. A longtime member of South Congregational Church in Granby, Joan had served as the assistant treasurer of the church and was a member of the Sow and Reap Club which cares for the flower gardens around the church. Joan also served as a board member at Stony Hill Village in Granby and she was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Ionic Chapter #100 in Suffield.

As a young woman, Joan coached the cheerleading squad at Suffield High School and she traveled extensively both domestically and abroad. During the summer, Joan and her twin sister, Janice, spent summers at their cottage on Leete's Island in Guilford for many years. They maintained friendships with their high school friends regularly meeting with them for lunch, dinner, and other events.

She leaves two sisters, her twin sister, Janice D'Orio and her husband John of Litchfield and Carolyn Dziedzic of Collinsville; five nephews, William Wainman and his fiancée, Sue Buckley of Torrington, John D'Orio, Jr. and his wife Janine of Yorktown Heights, NY, David D'Orio and his wife Sahar Chaudhry of Mt. Ranier, MD, Christopher D'Orio and his wife Regina of Seaford, NY, and Michael Dziedzic of Las Vegas, NV; four nieces, Susan Keiper and her wife Christine of Pittsfield, MA, Charlotte McBride and her husband James of Torrington, Sandra Freund and her husband Edward of Riverton, and Amy Dziedzic of Waterford, NY; 14 great nieces and nephews; and a long-time family friend, Cathleen Metcalf. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Arlene Gibbs and Faith Wainman; and two nephews, Jeffrey Wainman and Edward "Kip" Keiper.

Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 28, 5-8 p.m., with an Order of the Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 11 a.m., at South Congregational Church, 242 Salmon Brook St., Granby. Burial will follow in Granby Cemetery, Granby.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Stacy Nerenstone and her nurses, Laurie Veale and Helen Martin for the special care given to Joan.
