
John J. Poirier of Avon passed away December 13, 2015 surrounded by family following a brief illness.
The son of Marie (Bilodeau) and the late Edward Poirier, John was born October 27, 1963 and was raised in Avon. He was the beloved brother of David (Julie) Poirier of Mobile, Alabama, Alan (Cheryl) Poirier of Old Lyme, and Philip (Charline) Poirier of Avon. He was predeceased by his brother and friend, Dennis. In addition to his mother and brothers, Uncle John is survived by many nephews and nieces who will miss him dearly, Susan (Jason) Zybert of West Hartford, Christopher, Nicole, and Michael (Amy) Poirier of Avon, Michelle (Adam) Marchand, of Colchester, VT, Jacqueline (Sam) Greene of Mobile, Jonathan (Nicole) Poirier of Knoxville, TN, Daniel, Matthew, Joseph, and Sarah Poirier of Mobile, Andrew, Robert, and Jeffrey Poirier of Old Lyme, 7 great-nephews and nieces, and a large extended family. In addition to John’s family, he had countless friends including those John and his trusty dog Cody made in the boating community of Southeastern Connecticut and on the Connecticut River.
A US Merchant Marine Officer, he enjoyed being with family and his buddies on the water more than anything. A day fishing with John on the “Bluefish” was always a day to remember.

John was previously a service advisor at O’Neill’s Chevrolet-Buick of Avon and prior to that in the service department of Mitchell Auto Group in Simsbury. Many customers became friends of John’s and he had a wide circle of friends in the car service industry across the Farmington Valley.
John also counted as close friends the doctors and staff he has known since 1992 in the Kidney Transplant Program at Hartford Hospital. John was blessed with the miracle of organ donation and was always happy to help with promoting the program. John’s family is deeply grateful to the doctors and staff of Hartford Hospital for the care they have given John.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, December 17th from 3-7pm at Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, Canton. Funeral will be SATURDAY, December 19th, 9:15 AM from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Church, 50 Church Street, Collinsville. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, John would want you to spend a day fishing with a friend. “Fair weather and following seas Captain John, you will be greatly missed.”
