Simsbury Obituary: Norman Johnson, Jr., 91

Condolences to his family and friends.

Norman P. Johnson, Jr., 91, of Simsbury, beloved husband of Alice (Tregde) Johnson, passed away Monday, September 19, 2016.

Son of the late Mabel (VanNostrand) and Norman P. Johnson, Sr., he was born and raised on Staten Island, NY. While attending Wagner College, Norman's college career was interrupted by World War II while he served in the US Army in France and Germany with the 13th Infantry, 8th Division. He returned to school and earned a B.S. at Wagner, going on to earn a Master's degree at Brown University.

He taught at Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a year, then began his career with Norton Co. where he remained until he retired. In his retirement, he taught math and business management part-time at Post University. Norman attended Valley Community Baptist Church for over 30 years; was active in the Avon Art's Council; was a past board member at the Master's School; was a member of the New England Chapter Prison Fellowship where he also was editor of the newsletter for many years; and was a member of the Simsbury VFW.

Besides his wife, Alice, he is survived by his daughters Janet McDaniel (Hunter) of Boulder, CO, and Donna Johnston of Westfield, MA; son, Norman P. Johnson, III (Brenda) of Tecumseh, MI; grandchildren Chapman, Nora, Ryan, Tressa, Norman, and Kristen; and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by daughter Sandra Johnson, brother Warren Johnson, and sister Doris Fretz.

Norman's family will receive friends Thursday, September 22 from 6 – 8 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 23, at 11 AM at Valley Community Baptist Church, 590 West Avon Road, Avon. A private burial with military honors will be held in Simsbury Cemetery.
