Simsbury PD Issues Scammer Warning

The Simsbury Police Department is telling folks to be careful when they receive calls and/or emails from people seeking money.

SIMSBURY, CT — Local police are warning residents to be wary of a potential scam that could separate them from their money.

On Monday, the Simsbury Police Department issued an alert reminding folks to take caution when receiving phone calls or emails from people requesting money.

"These requests could be for a multitude of fraudulent reasons, such as late utility payments, computer hacking, and IRS tax delinquency payments, just to name a few," wrote the SPD.

Another common way for scam artists to get your money is they erquest that you go to a store and purchase gift cards, police said.

"Once the gift cards are purchased, the scammer then requests information off the gift card as a form of payment for the fraudulent reason," police wrote.

Here's what people should do, police said:

• If you get a phone call from someone requesting payment and you do not know them, hang up and end the call.

• Don't ever provide personal information over the phone or Internet.

• Don't purchase gift cards as a form of payment.

• Don't send cash through the mail.
