Simsbury Senior Citizens To Get Break On Sewer Bills

Simsbury Selectmen this week unanimously approved a plan allowing qualifying senior citizens to get relief on their sewer bills.

SIMSBURY, CT — Simsbury selectmen this week easily said "yes" to a proposal to expand senior citizen tax credits to those paying sewer fees.

With Simsbury First Selectman Wendy Mackstutis absent to due to illness Monday, May 8, Simsbury Deputy First Selectman Amber Lane Abbul ran the meeting, with the new tax credits the first item of business.

Last month, the board scheduled a public hearing for May 8 and Monday's hearing was extremely brief, as no one spoke either in favor or against senior tax relief for sewer fees.

Property owners who have property connected to the local sewer system must pay beneficial assessments to the Simsbury Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA) as a standard utility payment.

Those are not part of the sewer relief proposal.

According to Simsbury WPCA Superintendent Anthony Piazza, seniors connected to sewers would get discounts on their annual sewer fees.

Monday's vote also included a new provision charging the WPCA with the authority to administer the sewer fee breaks for seniors.
