Sewer Fee Discounts For Simsbury Seniors To Be Decided Monday

Simsbury selectmen are mulling a change to its tax code that would allow senior citizens to get discounts on sewer fees.

SIMSBURY, CT — Simsbury seniors may soon be getting additional breaks on the fees and taxes they pay to the town and on Monday they'll be able to tell town officials their take on the idea.

The Simsbury Board of Selectmen is mulling a proposal to amend the town's tax code allowing for elderly taxpayer relief to include sewer use fees, with a public hearing and vote on Monday, May 8.

The board of selectmen unanimously voted April 17 to schedule the hearing on the sewer tax breaks for 6 p.m. that night at Simsbury Town Hall.

Currently, seniors are eligible for multiple tax breaks, such as property tax breaks and others.

Property owners who have property connected to the local sewer system must pay beneficial assessments to the Simsbury Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA) as a standard utility payment.

According to the proposal, seniors connected to sewers would get discounts on their assessments.

"It sounds like a pretty good deal," Simsbury First Selectman Wendy Mackstutis said at the April 17 selectmen meeting earlier this month.

Simsbury WPCA Superintendent Anthony Piazza said if all residents who are eligible participated, the total amount would equate to $35,000.

"It's just a way for the WPCA to be able to make sewer service a little more affordable for our seniors," Piazza said to selectmen April 17.
