Simsbury Spinners make a difference at CT Special Olympics Winter Games

youth volunteers doing great work in the community

On March 4th, members of the Simsbury Spinners baton twirling team volunteered at the CT Special Olympics Winter Games which took place at the International Skating Center in Simsbury on March 4th and 5th. This team of dedicated twirlers left their batons at home on Saturday and spent the day cheering on the speed skaters and figure skaters as they competed in the 2017 Winter Games.

It is the Spinners 11th consecutive year volunteering at the CT Special Olympics. Up until two years ago when the venue was moved out of Simsbury, the Spinners also marched annually in the Opening Ceremony parade which was held at the former CL&P Facility in Simsbury. Becky Mahoney, who is the mother of a 5th grader twirler, commented "For the past 5 years as a Simsbury Spinner, my daughter has participated as a Special Olympics volunteer. To see these girls come together to support the athletes and be their biggest cheering section is always a proud moment for me. Not only are the athletes' performances on the rink inspiring to all of us who have the privilege of being there, the twirlers are learning to be active citizens in their community."

We are proud that this wonderful group is part of our community and wish them much good luck in the rest of their season of twirling.
