Simsbury Sports Digest for June 8
A berth in the state title game is on the line for one Simsbury team today, while some track athletes shined at open state championships Monday.

Willowbrook Park in New Britain was the site on Monday for the Open State Track and Field Championships. Julia Levesque helped the Simsbury girls to a 16th place finish out of 64 teams. The Trojans had 14 points, 9 of which Levesque helped contribute. The senior finished third in the 100 meter hurdles for 6 points and ran on the 4 x 100 meter relay team that placed 6th for 3 points. Madeline Nicholson had the other 5 points for Simsbury as she took fourth place in the discus.
The Trojan boys meanwhile had a respectable 18th place finish out of 64 teams with 12 points. Kevin Stanko was seventh in the 800 meter run for 2 points. Stanko also ran on the 4 x 800 meter relay which finished seventh for 2 more points. But the performance of the meet for Simsbury was Brian Eilers, who took second place in the javelin which was worth 8 points.
Finally the boys lacrosse team will travel to Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk tonight with a Class L state title in their sights. The Trojans take on Fairfield Prep in the semi-finals at 6:30 p.m. The winner advances to the state championship game.

Over the weekend the the Iron Horse Half Marathon was held. The weather was perfect. More than 1,600 people competed in the three races, which included the signature half marathon, along with a 10k and a 5k. The half drew well over 900 athletes with Michael Keenan of South Glastonbury taking top honors. The 38-year-old Keenan posted a finishing time of 1:19:54. Henry Withers was the first Simsbury resident to cross the finish line. The 20-year-old Withers, who lives in West Simsbury, finished in 17th place with a time of 1:26:12, just in front of Maureen Terwilliger of Guilford who was the first female finisher with a time of 1:26:16.
