Simsbury Sports Digest for April 27
A good couple of days on the links for Simsbury High while the baseball team continues to struggle.

As the mercury topped 80 degrees with brilliant sunshine yesterday one thought went through the heads of golfers everywhere... "Ah, the first bona fide golf day of the year." Well, the Simsbury boys golf team was fortunate enough to have a tournament scheduled with Hall at Rockledge Golf Club in West Hartford. And the Trojans did not waste the beautiful weather, edging the Warriors 154-155. Adam Ziewacz earned medalist honors with the low round of the day. Ziewacz shot a stellar even par 36. Simsbury is back in action today as they visit Wethersfield at 3 p.m.
The girls meanwhile posted their first win of the young season, beating Newington 239-243. Stephanie Rosenberg turned in the low round of the day for the Trojans (1-1-1.) Rosenberg carded a 54, particularly impressive considering she is just a freshman and a beginner in the sport with just a handful of complete 9 hole rounds. Simsbury travels to Portland West Country Club today to take on Middletown/Norwich Free Academy at 3 p.m.
The girls tennis team won in convincing fashion over Berlin 6-1 on Monday. Natalie St. Denis, Emily Amarell, and Monika Dragulski all won in straight sets for the Trojans (1-1). As did the #1 doubles team of Leah Anderson and Sara Mattison. Both #2 and #3 doubles gutted it out over 3 sets to win. Audrey Goulart and Jenna Verrengia dropped the first set 1-6, but stormed back to win the last two, 6-3, 6-2. Danielle Weingartner and Nicole Baker had a similar result 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. The girls are right back at it today as they host South Windsor at 3:45 p.m.

The girls track and field team handed Hall High School its first loss of the season 98-52. The Trojan women were led by returning captain Danielle Robbins, just back from a concussion. Robbins was part of the winning 4 x 100 and 4 x 4oo meter relay teams, and won her 400 meter race as well. Julia Levesque won the high hurdles. Erica Hendershot took the triple jump. Meredith Willis was a double winner, taking the 300 hurdles and Long Jump. Also finishing first were: Jada Jenkins in the 100m, Torey Shuler in the 800, Min Fons in the javelin, Maddy Nicholson in the discus, Alex Rechin in the pole vault, and Catherine Topalis in the 3200m.
The boys meanwhile made a gallant effort against a very strong Hall team, eventually falling 69-81. Simsbury swept the javelin and 3200 meters and won the 4 x 800 meter relay. Hall bounced back with wins in the 4 x 100 meter relay and the 200 meter dash. After trading the lead through much of the meet Hall went ahead for good in the 4 x 400 meter relay. Despite a furious final leg from Kevin Stanko, Simsbury's anchor, who ran it in 51 seconds (falling just 0.3 seconds short,) the Trojans could not overcome the lead the Warriors built in the first 3 legs.
