Simsbury Sports Digest for June 1

Survive and advance is the name of the game this time of year while it was a successful Connecticut Cup for rugby.

The state playoffs are underway in most high school sports. These tournaments are single elimination which makes them very unpredictable. No one knows that better than Simsbury and Naugatuck high schools. The latter played host to the Trojans in opening round baseball and softball games yesterday. That means the Greyhounds were higher seeds in both sports. That is of little consolation today as Simsbury plays on after winning 7-3 in baseball and 9-4 in softball. The boys (11-10) will be at Southington (16-5) with first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m. The girls (12-9) travel to Bristol Central (16-4) for a 4 p.m. first pitch.

The boys volleyball team was not able to continue the upset trend as they fell to South Windsor 3-1.

Despite a tremendous regular season, the girls tennis team could not get past the first round yesterday. In a format that can only be called strange, the Trojan girls played seven qualifying matches at 1 p.m. against Cheshire, all of which they won. Then they had to turn around and play another seven matches against Fairfield Ludlowe at 3 p.m. Simsbury lost 5-2.

Boys tennis state tournament pairings will be announced later today.

The boys lacrosse team had a very good regular season, compiling a 12-4 record. They capped that off with a CCC championship win over Glastonbury. As the 8th seed the Trojans earned a home game in the first round of the state tournament today. They'll welcome in local rival Hall of West Hartford at 5:30 p.m.

Finally, The Simsbury Rugby club hosted the Connecticut Cup over the weekend which is the season ending tournament for Connecticut rugby. Twenty Connecticut teams played more than two dozen matches, on three fields on the Simsbury High School campus. There were more than 1,000 people in attendance of the day-long event. The Division I championship trophy went to the Greenwich who defeated long time rivals Fairfield Prep 24-6 in the championship game. Simsbury took third place stopping Staples High School 17–5 in the plate final. This is quite an achievement for Simsbury as they are only in their 5th year of existence and are competing with programs that have had teams for decades.

The Simsbury girls meanwhile defeated Southington High School in both of their matches showing the growth in the girl’s game by holding the first girls match between two Connecticut teams.

The Simsbury boys were led by a number of impressive performances including Garret Crowe, Luis Torres, and Captain Luke Bradley.  Seniors Josh Helmkamp, Kyle Denalsky, and Captain Chris Henry were outstanding in their final match wearing the Simsbury jersey.
