Simsbury Sports Digest for May 20

Rain, rain, won't go away ... Didn't seem to affect volleyball, track or, lax though.

The rain continued to fall this week, forcing the postponement of virtually every sports contest on the schedule for . The teams that played however, were very glad they did.

A little over a year ago, the girls lacrosse team was unceremoniously ousted from the state tournament by Guilford, 10-9. Wednesday the Trojans (9-4) had a chance to avenge that defeat, but they had to travel all the way down to the Connecticut shoreline to do it. This time it was the Indians who felt the sting of a one goal defeat. Simsbury came out on top 8-7 to exact some revenge and stretch their winning streak to a season-high 3 games. They'll look to make it 4 as they visit Cheshire Saturday at 10 a.m.

The rain did not seem to bother the boys volleyball team, either. Well, that may be because they play their games indoors. In any event, the Trojans bested East Hartford 3-2 Wednesday. The game scores were 25-13, 24-26, 14-25, 25-11, and 15-12. Simsbury got off to a strong start in the decisive game 5, then East Hartford battled back, before eventually falling. Ben Shelley had 5 aces, 4 digs, and 21 kills.  Deep Patel had 36 assists, 10 digs, and 14 service points. Noah Cyr chipped in with 19 digs and 14 service points. And Stan Perevchichov had 10 kills. The Trojans are back at it today as they battle Bloomfield at home at 6 p.m.

Another team that seemed unfazed by the weather was the boys track team, as they beat Farmington in a veritable monsoon on Tuesday, 103.5-46.5. Simsbury won 13 of the 18 events, sweeping points in eight, including all three relays. Despite the horrible weather Kevin Stanko, ran a personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.5. The boys and girls are at Newington for a dual meet today at 5 p.m.
