Simsbury Sports Digest for May 27
Simsbury to host the biggest event of the year in one sport, while so much spring rain created a furious finish to the regular season in other sports.

The spring high school sports season is usually a sprint. You have three months of games crammed into 10 weeks. But the weather this spring has been so rainy that many teams have been playing games on consecutive days just trying to finish the regular season schedule before the state playoffs begin next week.
This, apparently, has not bothered the Simsbury girls tennis team, who keep right on winning. Yesterday it was a 7-0 shut out of Conard to finish the regular season 11-2, and 7-0 in league play. No. 3 singles player Emily Amarell completed an undefeated regular season with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph. Other winners were: No. 1 singles Cathy Baker 6-1, 6-0, Natalie St. Denis 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles, and No. 4 singles Monika Dragulski 6-0, 6-0. Almost as impressive as Amarell, the Trojan doubles teams lost only twice this season. Match scores against Conard were: No. 1 doubles Leah Anderson/Sarah Mattison 6-0, 6-0, No. 2 Audrey Goulart/Jenna Verrengia 7-5, 6-2, No. 3 Laura Sanfilippo/Rebecca Schulz 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.
The baseball team played three games in three days and looked a little weary as they won just one of the three, 5-4 over Hall on Wednesday. They fell to Farmington 4-3 yesterday and 11-3 to New Britain Tuesday.

Sunday, Simsbury High School will host the 4th annual State Rugby Championship tournament at 9:30 a.m. This event brings together 12 teams from across the state including Amity, Darien, Fairfield, Fairfield Prep, Greenwich, Staples, Cheshire, Southington, Simsbury, Stamford Academy, Madison, and New London. And if some high school athletes found it challenging to play three games in three days, try three games in one day. That is what is ahead for the teams who advance to the finals. Simsbury has high hopes of getting there after overcoming injuries and beating rival Cheshire this season. It won't be easy though, as they will likely have to go through nationally ranked Greenwich or Fairfield Prep to get there.
Earlier this week the boys track team won the CCC Championship meet at Simsbury High school with 156.5 points to best 2nd place Hall's total of 107.25. There were numerous noteworthy performances including: Dom Gerardi who won the pole vault, Alex Kern who took first in the shot put, Brian Eilers who took top honors in the javelin, Bobby Ritz who won the discus. The 4 x 800 Relay team of Bobby Keefrider, Josh Boltz, Jefferson Wilkes and Kevin Stanko was 2nd and the 4 x 400 relay team of Kyle Heubner, Jefferson Wilkes, Kevin Stanko and Merritt Gasho finished first.
