Break A Leg And Join Cast Of Simsbury Theater Group

SIMSBURY, CT — If you have a hankering to perform, you might want to send a video of your talents to a Simsbury-based theater group.

They still need to fill three more roles in their springtime productions.

Simsbury Light Opera Co. announced Tuesday, Jan. 3, that it is conducting video auditions for several open roles in its spring production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s "Trial by Jury" and "The Sorcerer," which will be performed April 22, 23, 29 and 30 at Henry James Memorial School in Simsbury.

There are several open roles to be cast:

• Role of "Alexis" (The Sorcerer) -- a lead male tenor, late teens to early 30s, selfish, arrogant yet charming, especially to love interest Aline.

• Role of "Usher" (Trial by Jury) – a male baritone, supportive role, central figure who takes his job quite seriously at court.

• Role of "Defendant" (Trial by Jury) – a lead, adult male tenor, charismatic, self-assured, demonstrates “swagger.”

Artistic Director Renee Haines and Musical Director Nathaniel Baker will lead the spring performances of "The Sorcerer" and "Trial by Jury."

"The Sorcerer" is a sweet love story about a young man who hires a sorcerer to brew a love potion that causes villagers to fall in love with the first person they see, resulting in a comedy of mismatched lovers.

"Trial by Jury" is a one-act, comic operetta about a breach of marriage lawsuit.

The judge and British legal system are objects of light-hearted satire and the plot is full of ludicrous twists and turns.

Those auditioning should submit a video of themselves singing any Gilbert & Sullivan music (preferably upbeat or patter in style), or a similar song in English demonstrating vocal ability and agility.

Rehearsals will be held Sunday nights from 6 to 9 pm for the full cast and also Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. for principals at Basingstoke, 5 Herman Drive, Simsbury.

All cast members will need to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination or a physician’s note excusing the required vaccination.
