Skiers From Simsbury School Win 3rd Straight Conference Title

The team won the NEPSAC Class B championship on Wednesday at Ski Sundown.

SIMSBURY, CT — For the third year in a row, the Ethel Walker School's varsity ski team took home the first place trophy in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Championship. This year, the team moved up from Class C and raced in the Class B championship held Wednesday, February 13 at Ski Sundown in New Hartford.

Each skier contributed to the team's win. Anneliese Sonju placed first, Elise Namnoum placed 12th and Nancy Gfeller placed 21st. Overall, the team placed second in Giant Slalom.

In Slalom, Sonju placed first, Namnoum was 10th and Gfeller finished 16th out of 71 racers and the team finished in first place.

With the combined scores, Walker’s averaged 61 points, finishing with the lowest points. The team is coached by Gretchen Sonju and Brendan O’Dwyer.

Walker’s Athletic Director John Monagan is pleased with another championship title in a more competitive field.

“These championships are built on hard work by individuals," he said. "They are a testament to the unity of the team which is built into the fabric of our program. They support and care for one another, and that cohesion shows itself in their results. We couldn't be more proud of the team and their coaches.”
