Simsbury Sports Digest for March 14

Swimmers continue to take center stage.

The Class L championships are slated for Tuesday March 15 at 3 p.m. on the campus of Wesleyan University for the boys swim team. The Trojans took part in the time trials over the weekend with seven swimmers qualifying for the tomorrow's finals.

Senior Christian Gronbeck earned the top seed in the 200 and 500 freestyle. He was also on the 400 freestyle relay team that qualified 10th. On that team are fellow seniors Ben Saperstein and Lee Voghel, along with sophomore Doug Nicholson. Saperstein also qualified in 3rd for the 100 Backstroke while Voghel got the nod in the 100 yard butterfly and 50 freestyle where he is seeded 10th and 12th respectively. Nicholson earned the 12th seed in the 100 breaststroke and is on another relay team — the 200 medley which qualified in 12th place. On that squad are junior Jehwoo Ahn and a pair of freshmen Nicholas Stamboulis and Kyle Chambers. Ahn also qualified in both the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. Chambers will swim the 100 butterfly.

The Class L championships will be followed by the Open championships later this week. Matthew Morrison will represent Simsbury in diving. The start time is 6 p.m. at Hamden High School Thursday, March 17. Then Saturday the swimmers will take the spotlight at 2:30 p.m. at Yale University. Qualifiers for that meet are based on performance in tomorrow's divisional finals.
