Simsbury Sports Digest for March 21

As the season of winter came to a close this weekend, so did the winter high school sports season.

Two outgoing seniors helped the Simsbury boys swim team to a respectable showing at the state open championships. Christian Gronbeck added to what was already a very good high school swimming career. Gronbeck took 3rd in the 500 freestyle and 4th in the 200 free at Yale on Saturday.

Those two results plus Matthew Morrison's 16th place finish in the diving competition at Hamden on Thursday, gave Simsbury 56 points, good enough for 27th place out of 52 teams. Considering the Trojans had only two athletes factor in the points, 27th is a very good finish.

For the year Gronbeck earned all-conference and all-state honors. Morrison also was named both all-state and all-conference in diving. And Ben Saperstein made the all-conference team in the 100 backstroke. The swim team will have a much different look to it next year as Gronbeck, Morrison, Saperstein, Lee Voghel and others are graduating.
