On Thursday, June 6 at 7:00pm, professional storyteller Milbre Burch will present “Tales from Beyond the Ban: Folktales from Libya, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen” at the Storyteller’s Cottage.

This is a spoken word concert of oral tradition tales from the seven predominantly-Muslim countries named in the president’s initial Travel Ban. The folktales are bookended by excerpts of oral histories of international graduate students from some of those countries. “Tales from Beyond the Ban” has been featured at a World Refuge Day event in Columbia, MO, the National Storytelling Network’s 2018 Summit in Kansas City, the RaceBridges online project in Chicago, the series at the Hans Christian Statue in NYC’s Central Park, the Grapevine series at Busboys and Poets in DC, and more. The University of Missouri has showcased it through the Missouri Scholar’s Academy, Women’s and Gender Studies Department Graduate Conference, and an Unbound Book Festival event for undergrads.

Milbre Burch is a Grammy-nominated recording artist, an internationally known, Oracle-award-winning storyteller, a published poet and writer and a sought-after storytelling coach and teaching artist. Called “one of the most important voices in the storytelling revival,” she has appeared at the National Storytelling Festival seven times since 1984 and received a “Storytelling Oscar,” the Circle of Excellence Award, from the National Storytelling Network in 1999. She has been featured at storytelling, spoken word and theatre festivals in 36 states and in fifteen European cities. Most recently she was a featured teller at the Festival at the Edge in Shropshire, England.
