With Tax Hike Planned, Simsbury Budget Hearing Continues This Week

SIMSBURY, CT — The Simsbury Board of Finance will continue its public hearing on the proposed fiscal year 2026-27 budget on Tuesday, April 21, at 5:45 p.m. at Simsbury Town Hall, 933 Hopmeadow St.

The continuation follows an April 7 meeting at which the board voted to extend the hearing.

The session, required under the town charter, will cover proposed operating budgets from the Simsbury Board of Selectmen and Simsbury Board of Education, along with capital improvement projects.

Taxpayers and residents may comment on any proposed appropriation or other business brought before the board.

The latest budget proposal totals $130,995,939 in gross expenditures, a $2,993,970 increase, or 2.34%, over the current fiscal year.

The town’s operating budget is proposed at $30,628,420, up 3.39%, while the school district’s operating budget would rise 2.79% to $91,303,244. Debt service is projected to decrease 5.13% to $9,064,275.

Anticipated revenue is expected to decline 3.54% to $14,434,446. To offset that drop, the amount to be raised through local taxes is projected at $114,950,949, an increase of $3,213,666, or 2.88%.

Under the proposal, the mill rate would increase from 33.02 to 33.73, a rise of 0.71 mills.

For a median-valued home, annual property taxes would increase from $10,401 to $10,625 — a $224, or 2.15%, increase, according to the town.

The estimate does not include any potential change to the fire district mill rate.

The proposal also calls for using $1,610,544 from capital reserves, a 23.89% increase from the current year.

Because the budget hearing was continued, a budget referendum will now take place between May 15 and May 22.
